ReplyDeleteMy research is going ok so far. I have gotten my question narrowed down to be specific enough for research. The research portion of the project has been going pretty well also. I have been using the library and google databases for sources but I am interested in using the other research tools that were mentioned in class. Everything has been coming along well so I believe the only difficult part will be actually completing the essay portion at a good paste. Can’t think of any specific questions as of now but will be attendance on Thursday to see what interesting thoughts are brought up.

ReplyDeleteMy research is going well and I have not had much trouble finding quality research that will help me answer the question I am asking. I think the writing portion will not be too difficult because the scope of my topic is broad enough to have lots to discuss, yet specific enough to not be too general. My only question would be about beginning to collect our sources and recording them in the computer. Would you guys suggest doing the bibliography through Microsoft word and its input system that orders everything exactly how it should be, based off the kind of source being used? I know there are a million ways to make a bibliography but is this what you guys would suggest?
Professor Yurevitch told me that the bibliography for this portion of the assignment doesn't have to be perfect or anything. We're also covering how to do MLA citation tomorrow so I'm sure he could help you out on that.
DeleteAs for the bibliography, I have been using easy bib and it seems to be working pretty well.

ReplyDeleteMy research was not going very well so I have decided to change my topic (and of course write up a new research proposal as well). I don't know why but the databases are so confusing to navigate for me, it's getting better as I go I guess but I'm definitely still on the struggle bus. I have found it to be preferable to just look through articles from databases on the FSU libraries website for my topic. Does anyone know if sites that end in .edu are considered scholarly sources for this project?
9 times out of 10 I would say, yes! I believe those websites that end in .edu are reporting their own research and often times are peer reviewed.
DeleteSo far my research is going well. I started to enjoy my topic a lot more because I narrowed my question down to respond to a specific topic. My research paper is about the Congressional Black Caucus and finding historical records of the groups involvement in politics is quite intriguing. The databases that are available to me are quite helpful and they have a lot of information that is useful to my research topic. The most useful website that I have found so far is the United States Library of Congress. I don’t have any questions concerning my research project itself but I am concerned in what format I should present my research paper. Any suggestions? Such as a blog, bibliography, etc.?
ReplyDeleteA newspaper would be cool! That way you could format a timeline and you could use history as news.
DeleteI would consider sticking to whatever is the best and most comfortable approach in your opinion. Understanding that you project is in relation to history and past events, it wouldn't be bad to consider an approach other than writing a paper. Things related to History can sometimes bore an audience so a switch up could be beneficial to the appeal.
DeleteI agree with Ariana. A newspaper format would be cool and I think it's very fitting for the topic.
DeleteMy research is going slow but well. I had to think about what specifically I wanted to look for and what elements of choral music i wanted to focus on. I have looked at the fsu library online and I am hopeful to find most of my information from there. JStor in the past has not been great for me to use so I'm excited to see if for this topic there is anything I could use from there. What elements of choral music should I research? Any songs or composers any one is familiar with?
ReplyDeleteI would definitely look at how choral compositions have transformed from basic counterpoint (Byrd and Bach) to more complex and dissonant pieces (Whitacre, etc). There are so many directions you can take this topic, and I am glad so many people are researching music of some sort. I'd recommend taking a trip to the music library if you haven't already and even talking to some grad/ph.D students working on either composition or choral conducting.
DeleteMy research is going well regarding the evolution of sacred/liturgical music. I have found many sources, but now I am trying to weed out the ones I probably do not need. The databases have come in handy in terms of finding academic sources about my topic. I also have a few interviews set up with someone who has studied my topic for years and has a Ph.D. in musicology, so I am excited to keep pushing forward. It is definitely easier to research a topic you know a lot about because you know what to look for. It has been a little difficult to just sit down and put my thoughts into words, but honestly that is nothing new.
ReplyDeleteMy research has gone well as of now. I was originally going to study the effects of culture, heredity, and the environment on one's personality as I have an interest in psychology. However, realizing that the topic was likely too broad, I narrowed my topic down to discussing how family life affects child development. I have found a lot of found an abundance of sources through JSTOR, Google Scholar, and Google to help further stud how different things such parenting styles, poverty, marital conflicts, foster care, etc. effect a child's development. The only thing that I've had any issues is citing some of my non-academic sources as some of the websites lack some of the information necessary for MLA citation. Anyone have any comments on my topic or maybe suggestions for things I could research within my topic?
ReplyDeleteI've learned that family life can impact a child so much. After reading this, I thought about an extreme case about a girl named Genie. She's brought up a lot, especially in psychology classes. Like I said, it's an extreme case, but it could lead to something.
DeleteSo far, my research is going quite well. I’ve been using the online FSU library, which has proven to be a very helpful source of information on my topic. There is a wide variety of helpful databases in the FSU library that have shown to be extremely useful for finding information to help me with my research. I’ve also used Google’s scholar page for looking up trustworthy and reliable articles about my topic. It is a very helpful site and I highly recommend. Other than that, my research has been going along nicely. As for questions, I don’t really have any.
ReplyDeleteMy research topic is based on abortion and the ongoing debate between pro-life and pro-choice. My research is going pretty well. Since this debate has been going on for years and is still going on now, I have a lot of resources to depend on. I haven’t narrowed down the exact resources I’ll be using yet, but I have a broad idea of the articles and websites I’ll be using. I’ve been using Planned Parenthood and some random websites I came across. I haven’t really done research with scholarly resources, which I should be focusing on more. I just need to develop the exact research question I’m going to be working with, but overall, everything has been going smoothly.
ReplyDeleteIn your research paper, I think it would be very interesting to research and discuss how religion and culture plays a huge role in a person's stance of abortion. It would also be interesting to talk about how making abortion illegal very early in the pregnancy could either make abortion rates go down or the number of dangerous, botched abortions go up.
DeleteMy research has been going well so far, although it has not been extensive. Since my topic discusses the effects of the media on children’s development, I have found it very easy to relate it to the subject of psychology. I have found some psychology studies that will support my research question and they are valid, strong sources. I am planning on using JSTOR to find more sources as well as the FSU online library. So far, I have used Google scholar and I have been successful with my research. Although I have had no problems with my research, I am anticipating the writing of the essay might be a little more difficult.

ReplyDeleteMy research has been going fairly well, I'm just struggling to come up with a solid research question. I used to go on the FSU Libraries Database, last semester especially, but after hearing about jstor.org, it's been so helpful and I've found many great sources from there. I've been trying to find other sources and statistics that'll help me out in the long run, and I've taken lots of notes. As for the essay, I'm not sure how it'll all turn out, but I'm hoping for the best, honestly. All of this research will pay off!
Narrowing your question will probably be easier once you create a detailed outline, that way you know exactly what you'll be saying and so you can narrow your broadened reason for research into something more specialized. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteMy research is going OK so far. I'm not entirely sure if i want to continue with my topic of space exploration and colonization, due to its complexity and depth. In that regard, I'm still making a decision. However, in terms of good databases, I found the FSU library database to be useful. It provided me with my start, and if I'm ready to full dive into space colonization, I'll be ready.
You may have already noticed this, but in JSTOR, after selecting a source, there should be an option to automatically cite the source in either MLA, APA, or Chicago format (MLA is obviously what we're after).
DeleteI have decided to change the direction of my research paper. My previous topic for the research paper was sort of how music is effected by the society and time period it is made in. I decided to research the effect the internet and digital downloading and the world of illegally downloading music. So far, my research has been going pretty well as there are a lot of articles online and because of how new and prevalent the topic is. I have been using primarily online sources because there really is not too many books in the library about it. I have been uses databases such as GoogleScholar, JStor, and the FSU Online Library. I have also been using regular google and double checking my sources. The process has been pretty smooth, but I am a little worried about writing the actual paper.

ReplyDeleteIn my research proposal, I explained how people often have several misconceptions about dance. For this reason, I have chosen to not only further explain my area of expertise but also find more research on dance to provide evidence for my prior knowledge. My research is going good so far since I have been able to narrow down the questions of dance that I am exploring. I have used the databases from the FSU library, such as JSTOR, as well as searched on google. I am very excited to continue researching my topic since it is something that I am very passionate about. I don’t have any questions about my research yet but I am really looking forward to continuing to find more information and learn more about dance through my research.
Colleen Towey
DeleteI am also researching dance so I look forward to reading and hearing about your project. So far, I have found google scholar to be the most helpful, but I definitely have seen some great articles on JSTOR as well. Is there a specific genre of dance that you are researching, or are you covering dance as a whole? I think there are many different directions that you can take this in and I look forward to hearing about your research!

ReplyDeleteMy personal research into my topic has been pretty smooth sailing thus far. I am finding several new sources and learning many interesting things about my writing topic choice which will undoubtedly be useful in the construction of the essay. JSTOR seems to be the go-to source for now, but I have yet to try others such as Google Scholar. With any luck, writing the final draft of the paper should be much simpler one I have collected all of the sources that I need. MLA formatting shouldn't be too hard to use, especially since I have used it before. I am certain to have many different possible topics to address in my essay.
When you do give google scholar a chance, if you need to while looking for more resource, many articles will say they need to be purchased. Remember that this isn't true all the time because FSU might pay for a subscription to the site that the source originally came from.

ReplyDeleteMy research is going extremely well, as I have chosen a topic with much to research about. I also have a healthy amount of background knowledge surrounding my topic (real estate), and so I was easily able to come up with questions and ideas for research. I used JSTOR in the past when I took a history class, and so many of my sources originate from that database. My only complaint is finding a way to narrow my question, though I will discover a way once I polish up my outline.
As the paper does have to be very long, I feel as though your question can be broad to begin with and as you go deeper into the subject while writing you narrow down to key points.

ReplyDeleteMy research has been going very well. There is a lot for me to research and find as Greek Life pros and cons is a very popular topic in the media. I feel as though the pros will be more difficult to support in the long run. As I am a member of Greek Life here at FSU, I was wondering if it might be a reliable source for me to use personal experiences with what I have seen here and also interview those in leadership positions about the challenges we face and why the pros might outweigh the cons.

ReplyDeleteMy research is kind of tough. I can't really find anything that goes along with my topic in academic sources. I am going to continue to look and continue to think of another topic. But for now I have been using the FSU libraries database that I have used previously. There are so many articles out there I'm bound to find a few that work!
Audrey Lugo
DeleteI agree you are bound to find a few articles that could work with your topic! The databases are super helpful but sometimes it can be tough to find the sources you're looking for. I suggest narrowing down your search, because maybe the reason why you can't find a lot of information is because your topic is too broad. I also had a hard time finding academic sources for my topic at first but once I specified my topic more it became much easier. Good luck with your report!
I am thoroughly enjoying the research process so far, even though researching racism, gender stereotypes, and eating disorders in the ballet community probably doesn't sound very fun. Although it has at times been difficult to find articles that are specific enough to relate to my research question, most sources have overall been helpful. I hope to try to find a book or a film that reviews my topic since it revolves around the portrayal of ballet in the media. I found a documentary on Netflix that was insightful but not quite what I was looking for. I look forward to continuing my research and furthering my understanding of the subject.
